Storytelling in the Sand: Using Sandtray Therapy to Cope with Reproductive Trauma and Loss

Course Description
This workshop will explore how parents cope with trauma and loss in the perinatal period through the use of sandtray therapy as a therapeutic intervention. Real case examples of clients' sandtray work will be presented, and dynamics of traumatic birth experiences, pregnancy loss, termination for medical reasons, stillbirth, NICU trauma, infant loss, fertility struggles, and trauma that gets reactivated in pregnancy and childbirth will be discussed.
This training with offer a unique way to process and learn the dynamics of reproductive trauma and loss. The training will be full of case examples, pictures and videos of clients' trays, and creation of your own trays, even virtually! No prior training in perinatal mental health or sandtray is required, and it will give great examples to start a deep dive into that type of work if you are interested in either.

Lacey Castilleja Fisher is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor, Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor, Certified Mental Health Professional and Registered Sand Therapist-Consultant/Trainer with a mental health private practice in Austin, Texas. Lacey has worked in a variety of settings including in a Children’s Advocacy Center to provide counseling to children that experienced sexual abuse and their families, and she decided to take the experience she had there and apply it to private practice.
She built her practice around supporting children and adults that had experienced sexual abuse/assault and found a passion working with parents and parents to be when their sexual trauma was activated in the perinatal period. Lacey became passionate about working with parents that struggle with perinatal mental health struggles, specifically PTSD, after her own experience of becoming a mother and experiencing trauma after her newborn was unexpectedly admitted to the NICU. This led to Lacey learning as much as she could about perinatal trauma, pregnancy and infant loss, NICU trauma and fertility struggles.
Lacey finds that the parents she works with respond well to EMDR, IFS and sandtray therapy at her counseling practice. Lacey was a co-founder of the Texas SandTray Association and has served as the Clinical Director for the Pregnancy and Postpartum Health Alliance of Texas and now serves on their advisory board.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Discuss a basic overview of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
- Discuss the basics of sandtray therapy.
- Describe how sandtray therapy is appropriate to use with adults in the perinatal period.
- Demonstrate their awareness of multicultural considerations while using sandtray therapy with the perinatal population.
- Describe how perinatal trauma and loss themes can be generalized to broader grief & loss and trauma themes with multiple populations who access sandtray therapy.
- Discuss specific case examples that show how trauma and loss themes appear in the sandtray.
- Explain how sandtray can be integrated with EMDR principles and IFS through review of specific case examples.
- Describe their own experiences and assumptions related to reproductive mental health through experiential sandtray work.
Continuing Education Credits
Participation in all training sessions and submission of a course evaluation is required to receive a CE certificate for this course. Course evaluations are made available after all live sessions have been completed within the course portal. After completing the evaluation, participants will be able to submit a request for their CE certificate. This training offers 6 CE credits.

What is your refund policy?
More than 14 days notice is required for a full refund minus 7% administrative fee. Cancellations made within 14 days of training are eligible for a 50% refund or full transfer to another training within The Touchstone Institute. Only 1 transfer to another training is allowed. If you can not attend the transferred training your fee will be forfeited. No-shows are not eligible for a refund or transfer. Exceptions to this policy are limited to medically documented circumstances or family bereavements. Failure to attend without prior notification (no-shows) will not qualify for a refund.
