Course Description

Infertility impacts 1 in 6 couples in the United States, and it doesn't discriminate based on race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. Yet, so many individuals and couples feel ashamed when they learn that a family won't be as easy to create as expected. The definition of infertility has become more inclusive, where it is not centered around cisgender, heterosexual people, but is now inclusive and describes circumstances where people might not have the physiological parts or cells necessary for reproduction, and is less focused on age.

Oftentimes, mental health professionals find themselves drawn to this work based on personal experience, without thinking that other people's journeys won't be the same. Learning about the broad implications, experiences, and emotions is essential for anyone hoping to support others experiencing infertility.

  • Distinguish how the emotional impact of a reproductive journey is experienced differently and the ways that this can impact an individual as well as a couple.
  • Apply developmental frameworks, such as Erik Erikson, to the reproductive journey.
  • Discuss and identify the many forms that family building can take as a result of assisted reproductive technology.
  • Describe the potential impact that assisted reproductive technology can have on a relationship and the extended family.
  • Distinguish different therapy modalities and how they can positively impact working with clients struggling with fertility.
  • Utilize a framework for providing consultation for those seeking out the use of third-party gametes.
  • Identify the ethical expectations from the perspectives of both the psychologist as well as the intended parents.
  • Describe the unique aspects of parenting a third-party conceived child.
  • Identify the unique role that culture can play in discerning reproductive choices and how this can potentially be problematic when people are seeking out ART.
  • Demonstrate how religion can be both a barrier and a facilitator for ART.
  • Assess how “invisible cultures” via social media can play myriad roles in people’s treatment.
  • Assess ethical situations that arise in this work and utilize a construct for managing them.
  • Explain the overlap between the emerging legal field and ethical framework within this work.
  • Prepare scripts to assist in dealing with common ethical challenges in this work, in particular with third-party consultations.
