EMDR Fundamentals: Reboot through the Perinatal Lens
November 17th - 19th, 2024 with Dr. Mara Tesler Stein
More than 30% of birthing people describe their birthing experience as traumatizing. In addition to trauma occurring in the labor and delivery suite, traumatizing and similarly disruptive incidents can occur in the effort to become pregnant (infertility treatment, surrogacy, the adoption process), during the course of pregnancy itself (high-risk pregnancy, bedrest, adverse prenatal diagnosis, premature delivery, pregnancy/fetal complications, antepartum mood and anxiety or psychosis), or complications in the newborn period (NICU care for the newborn or medical complications in the birthing person including postpartum mood, anxiety disorders (PMADs) or psychosis). Because these events are common, often stigmatized, and rarely life-threatening, people frequently minimize their impact, and family members and physicians may not recognize their repercussions, making them potentially challenging to clinically detect.
This workshop will briefly review the fundamentals of EMDR therapy beginning with the neurobiology of trauma, then moving into model, method and mechanism of treatment. This review will incorporate the perinatal mental health lens when considering all phases of EMDR therapy. It will take attendees on a deeper dive of the Three Core Tasks parents face during the perinatal period (Davis & Stein, 2003), namely: 1. Development of Parental Identity for the current baby(ies), 2. Managing Emotions, and 3. Managing Relationships. This comprehensive framework guides clinicians around history-taking, case conceptualization, treatment planning, and target selection, allowing them more nuance and specificity as they assess ruptures in the perinatal period.
Using EMDR’s 3-prongs and 8-phases, the lens of adaptive information processing, and the guiding framework of the Three Core Tasks, attendees will hone and heighten their clinical conceptualization skills, which will guide their decision-making around the preparation and resourcing phase of EMDR as well as treatment planning and target selection.
With the use of extensive demonstration and practicum, trainees will have the opportunity to put these concepts into practice, fine-tuning their EMDR therapy skills with this population.
