Course Description

This comprehensive perinatal documentation course will guide clinicians through best practices for clinical documentation as we seek to balance what insurance and licenses require while using cautious judgment to protect both their clients and their own well-being while practicing ethically. We will discuss record keeping, holistic perinatal psychotherapy intakes, PMAD differential diagnosis, treatment plan development, progress notes, and dealing with the world of commercial (and state) insurance. Learn what your charts need in the event of an audit or chart review and feel prepared and confident that your documentation meets ethical and professional standards.

There is a narrow line between enough to prevent insurance clawbacks and too much that could adversely affect a clinician or a client- particularly in the current sociopolitical climate in the US. We will look at legal and ethical concerns facing perinatal mental health providers post-Roe, and how to proceed with caution. Various state laws will be explored and we will touch on other states with changing legislation.

This course will provide up-to-date information on the changing legal and political climate as it relates to reproductive rights and mental health clinicians' liability and obligation when working with reproductive mental health clients.
